WHAT ARE PREBIOTICS?

5 Min Read | 23 MAR 22

Whether you're a Bio&Me super fan or a complete newbie to our gut-loving world, you'll have seen that our deliciously diverse products all contain prebiotics.

But unless you've been studying the world of gut health for years, like our gut specialist and founder Dr Megan Rossi, you may be wondering what on earth they are and how including them in your diet could be hugely beneficial to your gut health and overall health.

Let’s get started…

What do prebiotics do?

Prebiotics, not to be confused with probiotics (we'll get into those shortly), are essentially food that feeds the good bacteria in our gut.

They're primarily types of fibre, and for a dietary fibre to 'win' the prebiotic title, its health benefit must be shown in several clinical trials. Now, that's a hard-earned badge of honour!

Prebiotics are linked to...

  • Improving blood sugar control and regulating appetite.
  • Supporting bone health and skin health.
  • Supporting our immune system - in fact, there's pretty convincing evidence that prebiotics can reduce your risk of needing antibiotics, particularly in children and the elderly.

So, where are prebiotics found?

Luckily for us, in over 35,000 types of plants - making them easily accessible to us all. High five, Mother Nature!

Good sources include dates, nectarines, dried mango, watermelon, onion, artichoke, asparagus, garlic, pistachios, almonds, chickpeas and other legumes - plus many more!

That's why, at Bio&Me, you'll hear us talking about plant goodness and the importance of variety and diversity in our diets. In fact, founder Dr Megan Rossi recommends we aim for 30 different plant-based foods a week to help our biome nourish and flourish.

Hang on, where do probiotics fit into all this?

Good question! Probiotics are the live bacteria (including bacteria and yeast) that prebiotics essentially feed.

Live microbes are found in many fermented foods like kefir (fermented milk), kombucha (fermented tea) and more. They also come in capsule form, but it's certainly not a one-size-fits-all. Each strain does different things!

Do all Bio&Me products contain prebiotics?

Absolutely! Good gut health has never been so deliciously easy.

Our prebiotic granolas, mueslis and porridges are packed with 15+ different types of plant goodness, and our prebiotic yoghurts with 18 different live and active cultures (totalling over 700 billion cultures per pot!).

We call this delicious diversity - and the more, the merrier!
